CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

Carrie Higgins was devastated when her daughter Maddi Higgins was killed in car accident last year. Now she wants other teens to know the importance of driving safely.

In honor of National Teen Driver Safety Week, the Higgins family is teaming up with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office this Saturday for an event called Drive with a Cop.

The event will give teen drivers the opportunity to hear from a panel of speakers about distracted driving habits as well as a chance to get behind the wheel with ‘beer goggles’ while sheriff’s deputies sit in the front seat.

Carrie Higgins said it’s important that teens practice safe driving habits.

“I really want teens to understand the importance of just getting from point A to point B and getting there safely,” she said.

The event will also feature the actual wreckage of the car Maddi Higgins was riding in when she was killed.  Her mother said the wreckage is not meant to scare anyone. It’s just a reminder of what could happen.

Carrie Higgins has also created a campaign aimed to make teens aware of the possible consequences of driving unsafely. It is 'Angel 5 -- Long Live the Legacy of Five.' The campaign represents five Clackamas County teens who lost their lives in car crashes in the last 16 months.

Clackamas police say motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in the US for teens ages 14 to 18.

Drive with a Cop is set to take place this Saturday at Grace Chapel in Wilsonville.

All spots are currently booked for the event, but Carrie Higgins said there are plans in the works for an even bigger event next year.
