A parked box truck suddenly started to roll down a southeast Portland hill. Two people were in the back; one man jumped out, one did not.

With Thomas Jackson looking for anything he could find to grab onto, the truck struck a home and plunged down a steep ravine.

Jackson walked away with only a slight limp, along with a few bumps and bruises.

"I was lucky man, because that's a big fall. And I was in the box, and I didn't have any protection," he said Friday. "I didn't have nothing. I was just holding onto a piece of wood with my hands."

The crash happened Thursday evening on the 8100 block of Southeast 145th Court. One home sustained damage to its foundation, while the truck caused minor damage to a second home and took out an electric box.

The movers were delivering a file cabinet to a home in the neighborhood.

Jackson said he still isn't sure how it happened. He said he and a co-worker had set the brake, turned the wheel into the curb and even set a block behind the wheel.

But then they jumped in the back and the truck started rolling.

"I thought it was going to hit a house, and I was going to be fine, or something, but then it just kept going, and then it started to pick up speed, and I'm like 'oh man' and I started holding on because I felt like things were just flying out and I'm like, 'I need to hold on tighter,'" he said.

The truck remained at the bottom of the ravine Friday. Jackson said his company's insurance will handle the cleanup.

As for what he might have done differently, Jackson said he should have followed the lead of his co-worker.

"I would have jumped out when he jumped out," Jackson said.
