Local mom organizes 'Drive With a Cop' event for teens to promote safe driving

Today marks the beginning of National Safe Teen Driving Week.

Carrie Higgins, who lost her daughter Maddi in a traffic accident, wanted to help teens stay safe behind the wheel.

In honor of National Safe Teen Driving Week, Higgins teamed up with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office to organize a teen driving course called ‘Drive with a Cop’ this weekend.

Deputies had a chance to talk to teens about the ins and outs of responsible driving, especially the mundane details drivers often forget.

As a part of the program, teens even had the opportunity to drive with a cop.

“The message we want to say is put that thing away while you're driving, it can wait. Your life is too important to get back to a text or answer a phone,” said Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts.

The center for Disease Control and Prevention says car crashes took the lives of more than 2,100 teenagers in 2013 alone.
