WASHINGTON (KPTV) -

They are calling it a baby orca boom.

Whale watchers spotted another orca calf near the San Juan Islands in Washington.

This is the sixth known orca born this year.

Experts believe the mother is a 38-year-old orca named J-17. She is more commonly known as Princess Angeline.

Officials believe this is her fourth calf.

Experts are excited about this recent population boom. Before this year whale watchers had not seen a single calf in three years.

Scientists hope this means they have turned a corner.
