Candlelight vigil held for man shot behind Dante’s

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday night people gathered behind Dante’s on SW 3rd St. to mourn the loss of 23-year-old Dion Mathews Jr.

Mathews was killed last Sunday after an unknown gunman opened fire in the parking lot behind the bar.

The vigil was organized by a Portland group called Go Get Your Children.

Mathews’ fiancé Antonia West and their two-year-old son were among those who gathered behind Dante’s to pay their respects.

Mathew’s mother Tonya Mayo was also present at the vigil and had trouble finding the words to talk about her son’s death.

“I can’t even describe the pain,” said Mayo. “I would never want anyone to feel this that I feel.”

Mathews’ killer is still at large and his loved ones are urging anyone with information to come forward.
