Clark County sees surge in IRS impersonation phone scam calls

Posted: Updated:

A common telephone scam has made a resurgence in Clark County.

The Clark Regional Emergency Services 911 call center received numerous reports Monday morning from people who were the attempted target of an IRS impersonation phone scam.

The scammers claim to be with the IRS making a "final notice" call, saying a tax payment is required immediately or the victim will be arrested.

According to the IRS, the scammers often become hostile or insulting.

Authorities say this is a long-standing scam and the threats made are not legitimate.

The IRS will never call to demand payment and will not call about taxes owed without first sending a bill in the mail.

Clark Regional Emergency Services said the majority of people calling to report the scam Monday were elderly.

Anyone who receives these calls should not provide any information to the caller and hang up immediately.
