PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Mayor Charlie Hales will not seek re-election in 2016.

In a release sent out Monday, Hales said, "Confronted with a choice between giving my full effort to the job of being mayor and spending that energy on a long and consuming re-election campaign, it's an easy choice."

Hales was elected in 2012, defeating Jefferson Smith. Hales had spent 10 years as a Portland city commissioner until 2002. He launched a political comeback when previous Portland Mayor Sam Adams did not seek a second term in office.

Hales previously announced his intentions to pursue re-election.

In Monday's release, he said it wouldn't be possible to both run a campaign and run the city, saying "there are other big challenges that need my full attention."

"The filing deadline is still over four months away, and I hope and expect that several qualified candidates will seek the office of mayor," Hales said. "There are some dynamic new leaders in our community, and I'm excited to see who steps up."
