VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A man who pleaded guilty to kidnapping a young girl at a Walmart store in Vancouver will spend more than three years behind bars.

Steven Hayes, 45, pleaded guilty to the charge of first-degree kidnapping with bodily injury last Thursday.

He was arrested in July.

Vancouver police put out an alert with surveillance images of Hayes after he made contact with a young girl in the store on the 200 block of Northeast 10th Avenue.

Police said he attempted to walk out with her, but the girl got away and Hayes ran from the scene.

He was later arrested in southeast Portland. The Columbian reported that a roommate identified Hayes as the suspect in the surveillance video.

Hayes told police he didn't remember what had happened.

Hayes was sentenced to three and a half years in prison, with credit for 86 days already served, along with three years post-prison supervision.
