Two outdoor enthusiasts scored dream jobs with Columbia Sportswear, and their first stop on a six-month assignment kept them more than busy.

Zach Doleac and Lauren Steele beat out thousands of competitors to become the company's first 'Directors of Toughness'.

So far, they only spent about a week in Alaska, but their new job is already the adventure of a lifetime.

Zach and Lauren were chosen to represent Columbia Sportswear, while doing what they love.

"I mean, really our role is to tell a story, and test the gear at the same time," said Zach.

And test the gear they did.

A full itinerary in the Alaskan wilderness. Trout fishing in the Kenai River, following polar bears on Barter Island, and ice climbing in the Knik River Valley.

"That was the most incredible landscape I'd ever been to in my life. First of all, we fly in on this helicopter and set up camp. We're on this tiny little section of this glacier," said Zach.

Zach and Lauren's goal is to experience as many challenging and diverse environments as possible, inspire others, and provide feedback to the Columbia design team.

Both of them returned to Portland this week, blogging about their Alaskan adventure.

They are now waiting to find out where they will go next.

"I'm sure we'll get the warm side of that as well, and the wet side. And the dry side. Warm, dry, cool and protected," said Zach.

Zach and Lauren said they consider many of the people they met in Alaska to be far tougher than they are.

To follow their adventures, Zach and Lauren both have blogs you can visit.
