A woman ordered a ride from Uber in southeast Portland and a few minutes later an SUV pulled up to her location.

The woman asked the man behind the wheel if he was her Uber driver and he said that he was.

However, as they crossed the Morrison Bridge, the woman received a call from her real Uber driver.

The incident happened just after midnight Oct. 11 at Southeast Grand Avenue and Alder Street. The Portland Police Bureau sent out a release Wednesday encouraging users of Uber to verify their driver is licensed with the company in the city of Portland.

In this case, the man driving the blue Toyota RAV4 told the woman she could sit up in the front seat. When the woman received the call from the real Uber driver, she told the man to pull over immediately and he did.

The woman got out of the car and waited for her real Uber driver. Police said there were no threats of violence or inappropriate contact during the incident.

Portland police said there have been no similar reports made of this type of behavior.

"We have many safety features in place to help a rider identify their driver before getting into a car, including the driver's first name, photo, license plate number and the driver's rating," said an Uber spokesperson. "We encourage riders to check all these details and make sure they match the driver and the car."

The fake Uber driver in this case is described as an East Indian man in his 40s with black hair and brown eyes wearing a brown leather jacket.
