MANNING, OR (KPTV) -

A wanted man who led police on a high-speed chase on Highway 26 and shot at officers was found dead after police returned fire.

A portion of Highway 26 was closed west of Manning on Thursday morning as deputies investigated a high-speed chase that ended with an officer-involved shooting.

Washington County deputies said U.S. Marshals were tracking Andrew Garrette Dehart, 36, and located him at a home in Seaside on Wednesday.

Dehart was wanted on attempted murder, kidnapping and first-degree assault charges out of Clark County, Washington.

While marshals and Oregon State Police were on their way to the home, Dehart got into a pickup and drove away eastbound on Highway 26, deputies said.

OSP and the marshals began following Dehart, and when he noticed them, deputies said he began firing a gun at them from his pickup.

When he drove through a tunnel at milepost 41, Dehart encountered three law enforcement officers who were waiting on the other side of the tunnel. They opened fire, stopping the truck.

Deputies said Dehart suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. He was later pronounced dead, according to deputies.

Initial indications were that Dehart was shot by police, but the medical examiner later determined that Dehart died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No law enforcement officers were injured in the chase or shooting.

The Washington County Major Crimes Team is investigating the case.

The highway was back open to traffic shortly before 7:30 a.m.
