One man dies in NE Portland fire, family gathers outside to mourn

Posted: Updated:

One man has been killed and another wounded in a house fire in northeast Portland early Thursday morning.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded to the fire at around 1 a.m.

Crews arrived to find the house on NE 69th Avenue completely engulfed in flames on multiple floors.

Firefighters started putting water on the fire while other crews searched for residents inside the home.

They later found that an 86-year-old man had died inside.

Another man was taken to the hospital but officials say he is in stable condition.

The family of the man killed gathered outside the house on the sidewalk after they had learned he had died.

Officials said the family had been alerted to the fire by smoke alarms and spoke about the importance of having detectors inside your home.

“Our condolences to the family of the person who lost their life this morning in this fire,” said Fire Chief Erin Janssens. “This fire is a tragic example of how quickly anyone can be overcome by fire and the importance of working smoke alarms.”

Firefighters want to remind everyone to make sure to have at least two escape routes in your home in case of a fire.

Officials say this is the ninth deadly fire of the year with an average of five each year.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
