SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A man who was shot and killed by police after a high-speed chase on Interstate 5 had pointed a loaded gun at troopers, according to investigators.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is investigating Wednesday night's deadly shooting that shut down southbound I-5 in the Salem area for hours.

Deputies said the incident began when an Oregon State Police trooper attempted to stop a Ford Bronco, driven by Jasper Levi Adams, 36, of Grants Pass, just south of Woodburn.

The chase continued into Salem and came to a stop near Kuebler Boulevard. Police said Adams was speeding and driving recklessly before stopping off the roadway.

As police moved in toward him, according to investigators, Adams "leveled a loaded firearm at troopers."

Senior Trooper Jason Perrizo fired one shot, killing Adams instantly, according to deputies.

Perrizo is a 13-year veteran with Oregon State Police.

The investigation is continuing and the Marion County Sheriff's Office said no further details would be released by the agency.

The shooting occurred at 5:30 p.m. Southbound I-5 was closed until 1:20 a.m. Thursday.
