Bikes stolen from in front of SW Portland store found after social media push

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A southwest Portland bicycle store can thank social media for getting back two stolen bikes.

Southwest Bicycle on SW Multnomah Boulevard has long parked locked bikes in front of its store, and until last week, there has never been a problem.

However, two bikes were stolen, their cable locks cut with what assistant manager Bowie Carns said must have been a pair of sharp bolt cutters.

“(Another manager) saw some sketchy looking guys out front, so he came back inside to wait for them to clear out,” he explained. “And when he went back out to check on them, he noticed they were gone and the cable was laying there cut in two pieces.”

The store posted photos of the stolen bikes, together worth about $1000, on BikePortland.org and on the shop's Facebook page.

Carns said someone saw the bikes in front of an apartment house nearby and called the store and the police.

Though the thief has not been caught yet, the store has its bikes back. They're a bit muddy but otherwise in pretty good shape overall.

The store is no longer keeping the bikes locked in the front of the store.
