A reckless driver nearly killed her while she was out trick-or-treating last year.  But Thursday, a Vancouver woman is sharing her story, hoping it reminds drivers everywhere to be responsible this Halloween.

Chelina Alsteen was trick-or-treating with friend Annie Arnold, her daughter 7-year-old Cadence Boyer and another six-year-old girl near NE 112th Ave and 39th street last year.  Suddenly, the driver of a Ford Mustang jumped the curb and drove up onto the sidewalk and hit the group.

Boyer, 7, later died at the hospital.  Alsteen was in critical condition for days, but by some miracle, she says, pulled through.

The two others in the group were badly hurt, but also survived.

Alsteen says she’s overcome a lot to be where she is today, and is still recovering from a traumatic brain injury and several broken bones, including her spine and her leg.

“I have had to work hard for everything that was taken from me,” said Alsteen, “Through physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and swimming.”

Nothing has been the same for Alsteen since that Halloween night, a day, she says she’ll never think of the same.

“I will never celebrate Halloween again, but my daughter and I will pass out candy to trick-or-treaters,” said Alsteen.

Alsteen says while she may never go trick-or-treating again, she knows others, of course will.

She feels strongly that more needs to be done to protect trick-or-treaters from reckless drivers, and hopes drivers everywhere are on the lookout for families this Halloween.

The driver behind the wheel of that car, Duane Abbott, is facing vehicular homicide and vehicular assault charges.  His trial is set to begin November 16th.
