SWEET HOME, OR (KPTV) -

A 15-year-old teen had died after he was unable to swim back to shore while fishing in the South Santiam River Thursday afternoon.

Police said Matthew Ryan Van Brocklin was fishing with a friend at around 5 p.m. when he waded out into the river near Pleasant Valley Bridge.

Officials think Van Brocklin then either fell or tried to swim across the river.

Witnesses said they heard the teen immediately call for help, but they were too far away to get to him.

They said they saw Van Brocklin go underwater and he did not resurface.

The Sweet Home Fire Department recovered Van Brocklin’s body later about 25 feet from where he was last seen.

The teen was not wearing a life jacket.
