TIGARD, OR (KPTV) -

A 12-year-old boy is in police custody and facing criminal charges after investigators said he choked his sister during an argument.

Police said the incident occurred on Wednesday and was reported to officers on Thursday.

Investigators said it happened at the children's Tigard home where they live with their parent. Neither child informed their parent what had happened until the victim relayed the details later that evening, according to detectives.

Police said the boy had attempted to strangle his sister after an argument between the two escalated.

When the parent brought the children to the boy's school the following day, the school resource officer was notified and conducted an investigation, with the assistance of another Tigard Police Department detective.

The boy was taken into custody Thursday and booked at the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center in Portland. Police said he was initially facing attempted murder charges, but in court he was arraigned on lesser charges of fourth-degree assault, strangulation and harassment.

Police did not release any other details about the investigation.
