A man was arrested early Sunday morning after Portland Police Bureau officers caught him attempting to open a safe near the cash register in a hardware store.

North Precinct officers captured Jeffrey Guy Sass, 43, when responding to the burglar alarm at the Orchard Supply Hardware at 4030 Northeast Halsey Street.

Officers saw a suspicious vehicle and signs someone had broken into the store when they arrived on scene, and could hear the suspect inside the store.

Sass was arrested without incident, and no other suspects were found at the scene.

He will be arraigned Monday, and faces charges of second degree burglary, first and second degree criminal mischief and possession of burglary tools.
