House fire in SE Portland attributed to smoker carelessness

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Fire and Rescue crews responded to a house fire on the 3500 block of Southeast Taylor Sunday evening.

The home, which neighbors told investigators was vacant, was fully ablaze when fire crews made it to the scene.

The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and confirmed there were no victims in the home.

Investigators determined the cause of the fire was smoker carelessness from someone squatting in the house.

Officials with PFR advise that smoking is the leading preventable cause of home fire deaths, with one of every four home fire deaths being caused by smoking materials.
