Leaf pick up starts this week in Portland

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

This past weekend’s storm not only left us soggy and wet, but it also dumped a lot of leaves onto the ground.

Portland road crews fired up their street sweepers for the start of leaf pickup season this Sunday.

Homeowners in certain Portland neighborhoods can now pay a fee to have street sweepers come by and scoop up leaves from their yard. All they have to do is sweep their leaves into the street.

Homeowners should rake the leaves into the street on the day before their scheduled pickup date and ensure the leaf piles are 12 inches from the curb so they don't block the gutter.

Dylan Rivera from the Portland Bureau of Transportation said the city uses the leaves to make compost and then sells it back to the public.

He adds that about 30 percent of Portland is heavily covered in trees.
