First significant snow of the season falls on Mt. Hood

Mt. Hood, OR (KPTV) -

Visitors flocked to Mt. Hood for a taste of winter as the first significant snow of the season fell on Monday.

Alfredo Veneges bought his neighbor, Alvin Hudson, to the mountain to drive around Timberline Lodge.

“Early in the morning, he actually said I want to go see Mt. Hood because it’s going to snow,” he said.

“Oh, it’s wonderful,” said Hudson, 94. “I like the snowflakes.”

A couple of inches accumulated at Timberline Lodge.

Mt. Hood Meadows measured between three and four inches above the Mt. Hood Express and some fell at the base as well.

Both resorts hope to open before Thanksgiving, but will need at least two more feet of snow to do that.

That didn’t stop Kyle Maggy and Nate Duffy.

The Portlanders camped in the Timberline parking lot overnight and hiked up the mountain to snowboard down.

They got the idea after surfing in Pacific City on Sunday.

“When we talked about it, it was kind of a joke,” said Duffy. “But it’s unreal to be able to do Hood to coast in a day and get both of the things you like doing in 24 hours. Can’t be a happier person.”

It took the two friends more than two hours to hike to near the Palmer Lift. They snowboarded down the mountain for about 10 minutes.

“It was definitely worth it,” said Maggy. “Now we’re both headed back to town to go to work.”
