Portland business owner and Royals fan pays staff $50 each for World Series win

Royals fans filled downtown Kansas City Tuesday as the team celebrated their World Series victory, but there were also cheers for the ball club in a Portland business.

David Vernon owns Sunset Heating and Cooling in Portland, and is also a huge Royals fan. To encourage his staff to join him in cheering on the team in their postseason run, Vernon promised $50 to each staffer if they rooted for Kansas City to beat the New York Mets in the Fall Classic.

Tuesday, he paid off his promise.

“All together we have 41 employees total,” Vernon explained. ”I will be passing out $2,000, because there is one Mets fan and the Mets fan does not get the $50.”

Vernon said he was inspired after the team made it to the World Series last year before falling to the Giants in seven games. This year he wanted to get more help cheering.

Originally from Kansas, Vernon has fond memories of the Royals heydays in the early 1980’s.

“I was around back in 1985 when they won the World Series 30 years ago. I was there in 1980 when they went there and lost,” he said. “The Royals have been my team basically since the day I was born.”
