Burglar cuts through wall of storage unit to steal family's belongings

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A burglar broke through the walls of two storage units and stole a Portland family’s belongings.

Shawna Bolles discovered the burglary when she unlocked her storage unit at the Public Storage on Southeast Halsey and 89th last night.

The storage unit was packed full of boxes and furniture, but only a couple of bookshelves, dressers and bins are left.

The items were removed through a large hole cut into the wall.

“Probably about 90 percent of what was in there was taken, just what they couldn’t fit through the hole,” said Bolles.

The break-in occurred on an unknown date after she last visited the unit October 12.

Bolles said the burglar accessed one unit, broke through the wall of the unit next to it, then broke into her adjacent unit.

“They definitely took time to get in there. Nobody could see them because they went in through walls and units and everything else,” she said.

Bolles said she had moved the majority of her family’s belongings into the storage unit while she put her home up for sale.

Now most of their belongings are gone, including clothing, kitchen appliances, camping and skiing equipment, wedding and family photos.

“It’s hard,” she said. “It’s not about the monetary stuff, it’s the stuff that we can’t replace that’s going to be the hardest thing.”

Bolles is hopeful the burglar or burglars will return her family's personal keepsakes.

“It would be really nice if the pictures and stuff were returned, no questions asked,” she said.

Public Storage has not returned Fox 12’s request for comment,
