Tow truck stops to help stranded car, finds another crash and victim

SWEET HOME, OR (KPTV) -

A tow truck driver helping a disabled car off the highway also helped save a second victim who had driven off an embankment.

Robert Hooper, a driver for All Star Towing and Recovery, was helping a couple, Janey Smith and Roger Walters, whose car had problems while driving on Highway 20 in Linn County Monday.

While Hooper was loading the car onto his tow truck, Smith pointed out a second car that had gone down and embankment and hit a tree.

“I was just looking around and I said, ‘O my gosh! There's a car upside down there,’” she recalled.

Hooper went down to examine the second vehicle, and feared the driver had died in the accident until he heard him faintly calling for help.

“At that very second that I was going to do whatever I could to help save this guy!” he wrote on Facebook. “I screamed up to the people, he's alive he's still alive!!"

Smith called 911, while Hooper stayed with the driver, who was wedged in the wrecked car.

Soon emergency crews from the Sweet Home Fire Department, Linn County Sheriff's Office, Sweet Home Police Department, Oregon State Patrol and Oregon Department of Transportation arrived on the scene and the driver was freed from the car. He is currently in serious condition at a nearby hospital.

The driver had been pinned in the car for at least six hours when Hooper, Smith and Walters found him. The car was out of sight from the roadway, making the fact that the couple’s car stopping at just that spot seem like a minor miracle to Hooper.

“The series of events that led to us finding him, it's astronomical, but it happened and thank goodness it did,” he said.
