A wanted murder suspect was caught in Coos Bay near the home where the crime occurred, according to police.

The body of 54-year-old David Marion Smith was discovered in his home on the 1100 block of California Avenue at 5:39 a.m. Tuesday after police responded to reports of shots fired.

Kyle Sun Ray, 27, of Coos Bay was initially identified as a person of interest in the case before an arrest warrant was issued for him Wednesday on charges of murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

At 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, an employee of the Coos Bay waste water management system contacted police to report seeing a suspicious person walking south on Southwestern Avenue just north of California Avenue.

An officer arrived and spotted a person later identified as Ray near the home where the deadly shooting occurred.

The officer identified himself and ordered Ray to surrender, but Ray ran away leading the officer on a chase that went east past Southwestern Avenue toward Coal Bank Slough, according to police.

The officer lost sight of Ray, so K-9s and law enforcement officers from multiple agencies responded to search the area.

Investigators said it was determined that Ray had taken refuge inside a home on the 1000 block of California Avenue, after finding evidence someone had forced their way inside.

Officers used loud speakers encouraging Ray to surrender, which he eventually did, according to police.

He was not armed.

Ray was booked in the Coos County Jail and is expected to appear in court Thursday.

Investigators have not release a possible motive for the shooting.
