A Longview couple and their kids were able to escape an apartment fire thanks to the help of a neighbor and a stranger.

The fires started in the stairway right in front of Chiann James apartment.

Neighbor Mark Hedgpeth ran out of his place after seeing flames on surveillance cameras and hearing loud screams.

"Notice the very bright lights on my cameras Sunday night a little after 10 o'clock, I came out and noticed a very big fire next door with my neighbors yelling they needed help," said Mark.

Chiann James was in her apartment with her husband and two young children when she noticed the fire.

"I saw an orange glow. My husband opened up the door and there was just a rush of flames all the way up our stairs," said Chiann.

After seeing the flames she realized they had no way out.

"He didn't know what to do he just said he thought we were going to die and I thought instantly we're going to have to jump," said Chiann.

Their only hope to save their kids was standing 20-feet below.

"It was a long drop and it was very, very slow. Time was moving really, really slow, so I had a lot of time to react," said Mark.

While Mark caught Chiann's 11-month-old daughter, a mysterious hero showed up.

"Out of the middle of the night a guy on his bicycle sees the flames, he gets off his bike, he runs over here without hesitation," said Mark.

That mystery man caught 2-year-old Joseph, but as quickly as he came over to help, he disappeared.

"He left quickly about 15 minutes and I've never seen him again," Mark said.

Chiann and her husband both had to jump out too, and while everyone in both units were able to get out safely, Chiann is glad her neighbor came running when he did.

"I'm just thankful they were there words can't describe how thankful I am for Mark especially for saving all of us," said Chiann.

The only thing the mystery man told Mark is that he lived in the area.

Investigators told FOX 12 the cause of the fire is being ruled accidental.
