HILLSBORO, OR (KPTV) -

A 57-year-old woman believed to be suicidal was stopped by deputies in Hillsboro and opened fire, taking her own life.

Deputies responded to Southeast Minter Bridge Road and River Road at around noon Thursday.

Someone had called authorities to report a friend with a gun and a knife acting suicidal on Brighton Lane.

When deputies arrived, the woman had left the home, but she was found driving nearby.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop to check on her and when the woman was asked to get out of her car, she fired a round from a handgun, according to a Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The bullet ricocheted out of the car and one deputy suffered a minor leg injury, according to investigators, but it wasn't immediately clear if it was from a bullet or shrapnel.

Deputies said the woman shot and killed herself.

Investigators said deputies did not fire their guns during the incident.

Minter Bridge Road and River Road were shut down for three hours for the investigation.
