Instructor terminated after giving 'racist' quiz in PCC class

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland Community College said late Thursday that it terminated the contract of an instructor in school’s CLIMB center program, days after students said he gave a quiz some called offensive, even racist.

Students have identified the instructor as Scott Sayles. FOX 12 reached out to Mr. Sayles Thursday but received no response.

The quiz students said they were given is called the "City of Los Angeles High School Math Proficiency Exam" and can be found on the internet.

Though it is styled to resemble a math quiz, but the problems it asks are different than those found in traditional textbooks. Questions include discussions of prostitution and drug trafficking.

PCC noted in a statement to FOX 12 that the course where the quiz was given was offered by the school’s CLIMB Center, a “workforce development” division of the school, ran with WorkSource Oregon, and that the instructor was not an employee of the school, but rather an “independent contractor hired by the CLIMB Center.”

One of the 15 students in the class who was given that test, who did not wish to be identified, said he was “very outraged, “shocked” and “disappointed," and that he refused to take the test, instead walking out of the class.

He called the test a mean-spirited joke, and childish more than racist, though other students said Thursday it was both racist and inappropriate.

PCC said that a lab assistant oversaw the sessions with student the rest of the week, and that a new instructor will take over the course Monday.
