VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A former prisoner of war, whose capture and rescue made international headlines, was in Vancouver Thursday.

Former Private First Class Jessica Lynch spoke to veterans at the 5th annual 'Symbol of Freedom' event in Vancouver.

In 2003, Iraqi forces attacked an American convoy and captured Private First Class Jessica Lynch. U.S. Special Forces rescued her about a week later.

Lynch is now a motivational speaker and was the keynote speaker at Thursday's event.

Symbol of Freedom raises awareness about a local non-profit called CDM Caregiving. The group provides a day center and in-home help for seniors and veterans.

Lynch toured the metro area and described her visit.

"It's been such a wonderful week here with you all, truly a blessing. We've come across so many people who are so nice and generous and we cannot thank you enough," said Lynch.

Lynch said she is a survivor, not a hero and that we need to honor veterans.
