Police: Officers shoot, kill armed suicidal man in NW Portland

Posted: Updated:

Streets around Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center remained closed Friday morning after police shot and killed a man who officers said was armed and suicidal.

The Portland Police Bureau said crisis negotiators responded to the east side of the hospital around 5:15 a.m. after receiving a report of a man holding a gun to his head.

Officers immediately taped off the area and stopped traffic between Northwest 23rd and 21st avenues from Johnson to Kearney streets.

Police said the 51-year-old man fired two shots into the ground. He later fired a third shot towards police officers at the scene.

Police then fired several shots at the man, hitting him. The officers involved in the shooting are both 22-year-veterans of the Portland Police Bureau.

Officers initially said medical personnel were on scene treating the man, but later said he died at the scene.

The man's name will be released on Saturday after an autopsy is performed at the Medical Examiner's Office.

Police said patients with appointments at the hospital should call ahead to confirm, as officers expect road closures in the area to last for several hours.
