More people choosing to 'Build Small, Live Large' in Portland

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

"Build Small, Live Large." That's the motto for many who are looking to downsize and call a tiny house, home.

Portable tiny homes are all the rage these days. These homes can pack a lot into them; bedrooms, bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, plumbing. People can even get an electric fireplace and a big screen TV.

New luxury options make living in a 269-square foot space more doable.

More people are choosing to go the tiny house route to save on jumbo mortgage payments and energy bills.

On Friday, Escape Homes showed off their newest design at a Portland State University display.

The new design is a 24-foot long, portable, prairie-style home. While the storage might be a bit of an issue for some, the designers are banking on more and more people hopping on the "Build Small, Live Large" bandwagon.

"This is a good way for people to simplify their lives. The prices on these are a lot less than a normal house would be, and they're more mobile," said Randy Woodman with Escape Homes.

A tiny home, that can sleep up to six people, will cost about $58,000.

The designer knows living in a small space isn't for everyone but he said a lot of people are using the tiny homes as offices, guest houses, or for vacationing.
