Ultralight pilot uninjured after takeoff crash

The pilot of an ultralight was uninjured after the aircraft flipped on its side during a take off attempt Saturday.

Galen Sarkenin, 25, was operating the vehicle along the Columbia River when he landed on in soft wet sand, according to a report from the Columbia County Sheriff’s department.

During an attempt get enough speed to take off, the craft turned at the last second, tipping on to its side and sending Sarkenin into the water, where his parachute deployed.

Deputies assisted the pilot to remove the ultralight from the river. Sarkenin refused medical attention at the scene.
