A man who kicked and punched the front glass door of a Lebanon business and then attacked a police officer was hit with a Taser multiple times and arrested, according to police.

Officers responded to the Lebanon Pill Box at 6:22 p.m. Friday. A witness reported seeing a shirtless man smashing the glass door and then swinging a sweatshirt over his head.

Police said the glass door was heavily damaged. Officers searched the area, but did not find the suspect.

After reviewing surveillance video, investigators were able to identify the suspect as 33-year-old Jack Eldon Thompson of Lebanon.

At 9:30 p.m., a caller reported an unknown man in her backyard on the 100 block of South Main Street. When officers arrived, the man took off.

After a short chase around the area, the suspect, later identified as Thompson, ran directly toward an officer. Police said he initially ran past the officer, then stopped, turned around and charged at the officer again.

Investigators said Thompson assaulted the officer. A Taser was used on Thompson, but police said he kept fighting with the officers, so it was used several more times before he was taken into custody.

Thompson was booked in the Linn County Jail on charges of assaulting a public safety officer, resisting arrest, attempted burglary, criminal mischief, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

The officer who was attacked suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital, according to police.

Thompson was also treated at the emergency room for minor injuries before he was booked in jail.
