PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A personal finance website has ranked Oregon among the most expensive states to raise a family in the U.S.

The list of the best and worst states for families on a budget by GoBankingRates.com has Oregon at number 43.

The study looked at factors including median income, state parental leave policies, food costs, housing costs and child care costs.

Washington ranked 27th. The worst states for families on a budget were New York followed by Hawaii. The most affordable states for families were, in order, Tennessee, Utah and California.

In California, parents are offered 40 hours of parental leave for education-related activities for their children, six weeks of paid family leave and 28 weeks of unpaid leave, according to GoBankingRates.com.

Oregon offers its residents 12 weeks a year of family leave, the same amount of leave provided by federal law, the study states. The state offers no paid leave, even though its families face living expenses well above national averages.

Oregon's food costs are fifth highest in the nation, according to the report, 17.6 percent higher than the national average. Child care and housing costs are also higher than most states.
