PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Starbucks red cups are a sign that the holidays are almost here. But the simple coffee cup is creating a lot of controversy on social media.

This year, Starbucks opted for a simple red design. In years past snowflakes, reindeer and ornaments have all been featured on the cup.

Now, some are slamming the company accusing them of waging a war on Christmas by removing the holiday symbols.

A former pastor who calls himself a social media personality, took to Facebook to start a new movement that has since gone viral.

In a video posted last week on Facebook, the former pastor asked people to have the baristas put Merry Christmas on their cups in place of their name and then post pictures of it. The video has now been shared almost half a million times.

In response, Starbucks released a statement saying the cups are meant to encourage customers to tell Christmas stories in their own way.

FOX 12 talked to local Starbucks customers to see what they thought.

"It's a red cup. It gets the Christmas or holiday point across. It's their cup, it works. It's a cup, a great clean design," said Kim Garriott.

"I like that it's a clean logo. It doesn't need all that extra stuff on it. People need more important stuff to think about," said Cicely Washington.

Meanwhile, the hashtag "Merry Christmas Starbucks" is now trending on social media. Some posted pictures as the former pastor requested and had the baristas put Merry Christmas on the cups.

While others posted pictures of coffee cups from other companies with decorative designs.

Some still say the whole thing is ridiculous saying they are more upset that anyone would say red cups are offensive in the first place.
