MILWAUKIE, OR (KPTV) -

A man attempting to steal a vacuum cleaner, DVDs and jumbo packs of toilet paper from a Milwaukie area business was cornered by a K-9 and arrested after trying to stab the police dog, according to deputies.

Deputies responded to a State Farm Insurance office on the 13000 block of Southeast Rusk Road at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.

A 911 caller reported seeing a man throwing items over a fence.

When deputies arrived, they noticed the building had a broken back door and spotted someone moving around inside who appeared to be trying to hide.

Deputies also located piles of items outside the building, including a vacuum cleaner and toilet paper.

Deputies surrounded the building and tried to get the suspect to come out. When there was no response, K-9 Kilo was sent in to try to find him.

Kilo located the suspect right away in an office, according to investigators, and as Kilo pulled on the suspect, the man pulled out a large knife with samurai-sword styling and attempted to stab the K-9 multiple times.

Deputies said the suspect damaged nearby drywall, but did not hurt Kilo.

Deputies were able to disarm the suspect and take him into custody. Timothy Allen Nelson, 37, of Milwaukie, was taken to the hospital for treatment of a dog bite and then booked in the Clackamas County Jail on charges of second-degree burglary, attempted assault of a police animal, interference with a police animal and resisting arrest.

Nelson was on parole for burglary, according to deputies.
