CASTLE ROCK, WA (KPTV) -

A 19-year-old was shot in the chest after confronting a reckless driver, according to police.

Officers responded to the 900 block of Front Avenue Southwest in Castle Rock, Washington at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

They arrived to find Caesar Atchley, 19, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Witnesses said Atchley confronted 23-year-old Zachary Cheesman, who had been driving recklessly around the area.

According to court documents, Cheesman at one point drove at a group of people that Atchley was a part of.

Investigators said Cheesman parked his car in front of his apartment, shot Atchley with a .45 caliber handgun and then retreated into his apartment, a probable cause affidavit states.

Atchley was taken by medical helicopter to the hospital. His condition has not been released.

Nobody else was injured.

Cheesman admitted to police he shot Atchley, according to court documents, but stated it was an accident.

Cheesman was arrested Monday and made his first appearance in court Tuesday on the charge of first-degree assault. His bail was set at $100,000.

A formal arraignment is scheduled for Nov. 17.
