SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

The driver of a small passenger car was killed in a crash involving a truck towing a 26-foot trailer, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Emergency crews responded to Howell Prairie Road Northeast near Conifer Street Northeast on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, investigators reported the driver of a Scion TC, identified as 19-year-old Joseph Spear of Silverton, was heading southbound on Howell Prairie Road when the car crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Chevrolet pickup.

Deputies said Spear was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, 58-year-old Kenneth Tschiegg of Salem, was taken to the hospital with injuries described as serious, according to the sheriff's office.

Investigators said it is not known what caused Spear to cross into the wrong lane.

Roads were shut down in the area for hours while investigators were at the scene.
