PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Family and friends of Laray Seamster came together near the intersection where he was gunned down for a candlelight vigil Thursday night.

Seamster was found near North Vancouver Avenue and Fargo Street suffering from gunshot wounds at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. He was taken to the hospital, but died shortly after his arrival, according to police.

“We deal with a very evil spirit often in this world, and that’s what happened right here on this corner last night,” said one pastor in attendance.

“I never thought I’d be one of these moms, I never wanted to know how it feels,” said Seamster’s mom Erica West. “I just want this to stop, it’s painful and it hurts. My heart is broken.”

“My son was a good son, he was a good father, he was a great man,” she added.  “We just celebrated Laray’s birthday on November 1st, he turned 26. This is hard, it will be hard through the holidays.”

No arrests have been made and detectives are asking for the public's help to solve the case. Investigators said Seamster was known to police as a gang associate, but it is not clear if that played a role in his killing.

“We want to pray a special prayer for the police, that they are able to get their job done without their own lives being taken, we pray for their protection,” said one woman in attendance.  “They’re displayed as the enemy father God, but they are here to help, and we pray they help and find the perpetrators of this crime.”

The group lit candles for Seamster and in hope of a better Portland. Many calling for the violence to end.

“Somebody in this community knows something, so say something” said one woman in attendance. “It’s not okay, this retaliation, this gang thing, this snitch code, it’s not ok. The rappers may make money off of it, but this is the pain that you bring.”

Witnesses told police that two younger black men were involved in the shooting and ran away from the area, possibly leaving in a silver car. Crime Stoppers is offering a reward up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
