Oregon City neighborhood peppered with racist fliers

OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

Dozens of what appeared to be Ku Klux Klan recruitment fliers showed up in the front yards of an Oregon City neighborhood Wednesday morning.

Jacy Whelan said the flier on her front lawn was folded inside a sealed plastic bag, along with a piece of candy.

“I thought it was pretty stupid,” said Whelan. “I kind of stopped reading at a certain point because I just don’t have room for that kind of hatred.”

Oregon City is the third area to be peppered with fliers of this kind in the past week.  Gresham and West Linn were targeted also.

Although the fliers may be offensive to some, they also appear to be legal.

“Whether the speech is hateful or ugly or repulsive, it’s still protected by the US Constitution,” said Oregon City Mayor Dan Holladay. “While I don’t like it, they certainly have every right to do it.”

Gresham’s mayor, Shane Bemis, took to social media to address the fliers, calling those responsible “hatemongers.”

“I know their depraved motivations are the exact opposite of who we are as a community,” said Bemis in his post. “There is no place for that type of hatred and ignorance in Gresham or anywhere.”

West Linn’s mayor, Russ Axelrod, called the contents of the fliers “deplorable.”

Similar fliers have been distributed throughout the country over the past year or more.
