Christmas display honoring former Blazer Kersey shines over SW Portland

A new Christmas light display in southwest Portland will honor a Rip City icon.

It is a tribute to Trail Blazers star Jerome Kersey, featuring his initials and his number 25, along with a Santa hat.

Hanset Stainless Metal created the display. It is 38 feet wide, stands 36 feet off the ground and features 3,800 lights.

The display hangs from the west hills home of Ron and Shantel Sloy, and can be seen from across the city.

Ron said Kersey was one of his best friends, and he was the best man in the Blazers star's wedding.

The Sloys wanted to honor their friend, who passed away suddenly in February, and keep his memory alive in Portland, where he played from 1984 to 1995.

“You know, he was an ambassador for the Blazers the last four or five years, but really what he taught me and my wife and people who know him is, he was an ambassador of life, really kind, gentle, soft spoken,” Ron said of Kersey. “Always had that beautiful smile that people recognize and this is our way of paying respect to him during the holidays.”

The display will be lit every night through January.

The Sloys are also pushing for another tribute for their friend. They want the Trail Blazers to retire Kersey's jersey number.
