How to prevent water leaks in your home

Posted: Updated:

The return of the rainy season means the risk of water leaking into your home has returned as well.

Water leaks can require costly repairs and cause health hazards like mold or mildew.

It’s key to keep water from pooling or collecting around your house, said Danny Kelley, a home performance advisor for Enhabit, a nonprofit that helps people make their homes more efficient and sustainable.

“Eventually it’s going to try to make its way into your house, and with older homes in Portland especially, through the foundation,” he explained. “It’s porous and the water can make its way in.”

Kelley said the first thing people should do is clean out their gutters.

He then recommends installing a plastic extension on your downspout to direct water five to 10 feet away from your home.

If not, water is “just draining right here by the foundation and there’s nowhere for it to go so it’s just going to pool next to the foundation,” he said.

He also recommends checking your landscaping to make sure it slopes away from your home’s foundation and will direct water away from your home.

Enhabit, formerly known as Clean Energy Works, offers a free evaluation of your home’s efficiency and safety.
