Winter weather draws visitors to Mt. Hood

Posted: Updated:

Blustery winter weather in the Cascades created treacherous road conditions, prompting the Oregon Department of Transportation to require traction tires or chains on cars and trucks driving near Mt. Hood.

Drivers reported slippery conditions approaching the pass on Highway 26 east of Government Camp, with many stopping to chain-up shortly after encountering packed snow on the roadway.

Those who made it safely to Timberline Lodge found a layer of fresh snow, as well as frigid, blustery conditions.

"It's amazing. It's beautiful. And that way, if we don’t get any at home, at least we've gotten to enjoy it," said Jessica Perry, who was visiting the area from Portland.

Even lower elevations like Government Camp saw significant accumulation for the first time this season, with steady snowfall into the evening hours, and more expected overnight.
