Lake Oswego French immersion school shows support for France

LAKE OSWEGO, OR (KPTV) -

Hand in hand, with their heads bowed, staff members at the International Leadership Academy observed a moment of silence for the victims of the Paris terror attacks on Monday.

Many of the staff members at the French immersion school in Lake Oswego are from France.

They wanted to show they stand with their country, where a moment of silence was also held on Monday.

“We are doing it also to remember those fallen people who, like I said, did what people in Paris do. Going out, having fun, laughing,” said Massene Mboup, the ILA director. “Those are things that they cannot take away from people.”

Students brought their teachers cards and cookies to show support.

Staff members were glued to the news on Friday and spent hours afterward trying to get in touch with their loved ones to find out if they were safe.

“It’s been two very difficult days here in our lives,” said Patricia Raclot, the Director of Pedagogy at ILA. “With all those uncertainties and all those friends not calling back.”

Raclot, like the other staff members FOX 12 interviewed, knows her family and friends are all safe.

But Raclot, one of the school’s founders, said she learned two people from her hometown of Metz were killed in the attack at the Bataclan concert hall.

Their names have not been released and she may know their families.

Preschool teacher Victor Attal said it’s difficult to explain how he is feeling.

He moved to Oregon this summer from the south of France and said it’s very hard not to be in his home country right now.

“It’s very difficult to contact your family there and you cannot assist them, you are just like a spectator,” he said. “So I don’t like that."

After the attack, Attal made plans to fly home this week.

“I’m not worried about traveling,” he said. “You cannot live in this fear. You just have to live.”
