23 governors oppose allowing Syrian refugees into their state; OR, WA not among them

The attacks in France have placed a new spotlight on the Syrian refugee crisis. Now, there's a pushback over a plan to bring some of those refugees to America.

Authorities said one of the Paris attackers posed as a refugee to gain entry to Europe.

Now, at least 23 governors here in the U.S. said they oppose allowing Syrian refugees into their states. As of Monday, Oregon and Washington are not among them.

Millions of people are fleeing the violence in Syria. Earlier this year, the Obama administration announced plans to let 10,000 Syrian refugees into the U.S.

President Obama is standing behind that plan. Speaking at the G20 summit in Turkey, President Obama said shutting access to Syrian refugees is not the right response.

Washington's governor is standing behind the president. Governor Jay Inslee released a statement that reads in part,

"Sadly, in the wake of these attacks, many people channel their fear and anger against ISIS into fear and anger against Muslims. Washington will continue to be a state that welcomes those seeking refuge from persecution, regardless of where they come from or the religion they practice."

Oregon Governor Kate Brown has not joined the growing list of governors refusing to accept refugees, but the governor has yet to weigh in.

On Monday, the governor's office told FOX 12 they have no comment on this matter for the time being.

At least one state representative wants more clarity. Representative Bill Post wrote a letter to the governor that reads in part,

"I am asking you, is Oregon scheduled to receive any Syrian refugees? If so, do you have a plan to allow those who are fleeing from religious persecution be allowed to stay, while still protecting our citizens from the possibility of a terror attack here?"

The Oregon Department of Human Services said they have been expecting to receive Syrian refugees, but in 2015 they have received only one so far.
