Report: Oregon's population tops 4 million

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Oregon's population has passed 4 million, according to a new report.

Portland State University's Population Research Center released its preliminary 2015 population estimates for the state and its cities and counties on Monday.

The population estimate for Oregon as of July 1 is 4,013,845, up from 3,962,710 in 2014.

The increase represents a 1.3 percent change, slighting higher than the 1.1 percent jump the previous year.

From 2014 to 2015, net migration – or people moving to Oregon – accounted for roughly 80 percent of the state's population growth, according to the report.

Portland saw the greatest increase, with nearly 12,000 additional people in 2015.

Multnomah and Washington counties saw the biggest increases for Oregon counties, with more than 10,000 additional people each, while Clackamas, Deschutes, Marion and Lane counties also each added more than 3,000 people to their populations.

The estimates are based on changes in the number of housing units, people residing in group quarter facilities, births and deaths, students enrolled in public schools, people employed, Medicare enrollees, state and federal tax exemptions, Oregon driver's license holders and other administrative data
