“She is a really good friend and the most caring and giving person you’re ever going to want to meet.”
That’s how Sara Bruce describes her co-worker, 23-year-old Andrea Laing, at the Hillsboro Kitchen Kaboodle store.

Laing, who goes by “Amy," was walking to catch a train at the Elmonica MAX station in Beaverton on Monday morning.

Police said she was wearing a hood and earbuds and accidentally walked in front of a train, slipping underneath it. The train severed Laing’s leg. Witnesses held her hand until paramedics arrived.
Austin Allie has worked with Laing for about one year and said the whole staff was stunned when they got the news.
“Our HR person called us back and said ‘have you read the news? She lost her leg.' And so it was just a strange day," Allie said.
Right away, Laing’s coworkers set up a “GoFundMe” page for her. They say Laing is healthy and she loves to run and hike. They hope that helps with her recovery, but they know it’s going to be a lengthy and expensive process.

They also want Laing’s relatives to be able to get to her as soon as possible.
“Her family is all in Canada,” said Allie. “So we wanted to be able to bring her family down because it’s traumatic enough being in the hospital and then not having your family to rely on.”
Friends say Laing’s wife is with her at Emanuel hospital where she’s in critical condition. They say Laing had surgery Monday night and Tuesday morning to remove her spleen and repair damage to her kidney.

Friends tell FOX 12 she’s in a medically induced coma.
In less than 24 hours, donations on Laing’s “GoFundMe” page hit $7,000 with help from friends, co-workers and complete strangers. Allie says it’s amazing.
“The outpouring of support from all these people, it’s just…it’s great," she said.
