PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Portland's combined sewer system overflowed on Tuesday into the Willamette River due to the heavy rain.

The overflow began around 6:00 p.m. from an outfall pipe on the east bank of the river near the Morrison Bridge.

City officials said the public should avoid contact with the Willamette River downstream from the Morrison Bridge until Thursday evening due to the increase of bacteria in the water.

It is important to avoid recreational activities during which water could be swallowed.
