I-84 reopens in Troutdale after storm forces overnight closure

TROUTDALE, OR (KPTV) -

The Oregon Department of Transportation has reopened all lanes of Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge.

Eastbound I-84 was closed for nearly 50 miles between Troutdale and Hood River after more than 20 trees fell across the eastbound lanes Tuesday.

Crews were able to reopen the highway at Cascade Locks on Wednesday morning.

By 12:30 p.m., I-84 was also re-opened at the Troutdale exit.

ODOT said they closed the highway so crews could safely work to clear the debris without worrying about traffic around them.

High winds are typical in this area of the Gorge, but officials said the trees were not used to the winds coming from the west. This caused many of them to fall.

Officials said there were wind gusts up to 70 mph.
