LA PINE, OR (KPTV) -

A Nevada fugitive eluded deputies in central Oregon and crashed head-on into a car on Highway 97, killing himself and two other people, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near State Park Recreation Road north of La Pine at 8:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Investigators said a Deschutes County deputy had attempted to stop a 2005 Dodge pickup in Bend, but the driver failed to stop.

Due to the suspect's driving behavior, the deputy discontinued the pursuit, according to Oregon State Police.

Minutes later, witnesses reported the truck passing cars southbound on Highway 97 in no-passing zones.

Police said the truck then hit a northbound 1994 Ford Escape head-on.

The driver of the pickup, identified as 47-year-old Brett Young of La Pine, was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators learned Young was a fugitive from Nevada on charges of felon in possession of a firearm.

The driver of the Ford, 33-year-old Steven Clink of Bend, and his passenger, Pamela James, 50, of Bend, were both pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

Highway 97 was closed for hours following the crash. The investigation by Oregon State Police is continuing.
